Allan Timmermann
Allan, a founding partner of Parala, holds the Atkinson/Epstein Professorship of Finance at the University of California San Diego. His research combines theory, data analysis, and econometric techniques to gain insights into price behavior and expectations in financial markets. His primary focus is on identifying the factors that influence security prices, enabling risk management, portfolio formation, and forecasting future price movements. Additionally, he specializes in the study of mutual fund and pension fund performance, pioneering new methods in areas such as forecasting during structural breaks, forecast combinations, and evaluation of predictive skills.
Allan's scholarly papers are widely cited by esteemed researchers and financial economists. He also serves as an associate editor for prominent journals in financial economics and econometrics, including the Journal of Financial Econometrics and The Journal of Business and Econometric Statistics. From 2012 to 2015, he served as a member and Chair of the Model Validation Council for the US Federal Reserve.
Throughout his career, Allan has received numerous awards and recognition from his peers. He has been the recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation, as well as Best Paper and Outstanding Paper Awards from the International Journal of Forecasting. Furthermore, he has received the Distinguished Referee Award from the International Journal of Forecasting, among other accolades.
Allan obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.
Ben Gillen
Ben Gillen is a partner at Parala and an Associate Professor of Economics at Claremont McKenna College. His research spans various fields, including Bayesian and financial econometrics, structural industrial organization, and behavioral game theory. Ben's work involves diverse applications such as return forecasting, estimating covariance matrices for large security sets, and developing optimal portfolio strategies.
Ben holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, San Diego, and previously served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Reza Vishkai
Reza, a founding partner of Parala, brings over thirty years of finance sector expertise in various investment strategies, including derivatives, absolute return, and private equity. He began his career as a fixed income analyst at Salomon Brothers and later joined Rogers, Casey & Associates, a leading US investment consultancy. There, he advised major corporate and public pension funds on investment strategy, asset allocation, and served as the head of the firm's Fund of Funds activities. He also worked as a strategic consultant for prominent asset management firms.
In 1997, Reza relocated to London to join Schroders, a global asset manager, where he established and managed the Structured Investment team, overseeing derivatives-based solutions for clients. Additionally, he spearheaded the development of the firm's single-strategy and fund of hedge fund businesses in 2000. Reza then joined Insight Investment in 2003 as the Head of Alternative Investments. In this role, he led various businesses, including Private Equity, Multi-Asset, Equity, Absolute Insight, and Farmland. He also chaired Insight's Absolute Return Investment Committee.
Reza also serves as the honorary treasurer of the Royal Society of Literature.
Reza holds degrees in Liberal Arts and Operations Research from Columbia University.
Russ Wermers
Russ, a founding partner of Parala, is the Paul J. Cinquegrana '63 Endowed Chair in Finance and Director of the Center for Financial Policy (CFP) at the Smith School of Business, University of Maryland. His research focuses on securities market efficiency and the role of institutional investors in determining stock prices. Notably, his influential research has contributed to the development of new methods for measuring and attributing the performance of mutual funds, pension funds, and hedge funds, as well as devising successful investment strategies. He also examines the investment behavior of asset managers and the impact of their trades on stock markets.
Russ is widely recognized as a leader in financial market behavior, as reflected in his publications in prestigious scholarly journals such as The American Economic Review, The Review of Financial Studies, The Journal of Financial Economics, and The Journal of Finance. His paper on mutual fund "herding" and stock prices (Journal of Finance, 1999) received the NYSE Award for the Best Paper on Equity Trading in 1995. Furthermore, his co-authored article on mutual fund performance was a finalist for the Smith-Breeden Award for the Best Paper in the Journal of Finance in 2006/2007.
Russ is also a co-author of a book, published in December 2012, that presents the latest scientific approaches to evaluating and attributing the performance of professional fund managers, catering to both academics and practitioners.
Russ earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Steven Goldin
Steven, a founding partner of Parala, boasts over 25 years of experience in the finance sector. He is widely recognized as an expert in asset allocation, portfolio construction, investment product design, and distribution. Steven is frequently quoted in the press and is sought-after as a speaker on these subjects.
Before establishing Parala, Steven served as the Global Head of Strategy Indices at S&P. During his tenure, he successfully launched over 50 new indices encompassing smart beta strategies, alternative investments, and thematic approaches. These initiatives resulted in the addition of $25 billion in assets linked to the newly created indices. Prior to joining S&P, Steven held the position of Managing Director of the European fund business at Enterprise Capital Management, a subsidiary of AXA Financial, based in London. He began his career at Prudential Investments, where he held various investment and client-focused roles.
Steven holds an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He also obtained a BS in Finance with Distinction from the Pennsylvania State University's Scholar's Program.
Davide Pettenuzzo
Davide Pettenuzzo, a technical advisor at Parala, is also an Associate Professor of Financial Econometrics at Brandeis International Business School, where he has been teaching since 2011. His research focuses on various areas, including time-series econometrics, Bayesian econometrics, asset allocation, portfolio optimization, and econometric methods in finance.
Davide holds the position of associate editor for both the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics and the Journal of Financial Econometrics. He is currently engaged in research projects involving machine learning econometrics and the examination of time-varying risk premia and volatility dynamics for multi-asset class portfolios.
Davide obtained his Ph.D. from Bocconi University in Milan.
